I am so excited to share this project with you today! My wonderful client let me creatively push her in a very colorful direction, and I must say I think the result is so bold and fun! It’s true, intense colors are not for everyone, but used in the right setting for the right person, they can be magical and breathtaking! This is surely a study that leaves an impression. Let me show you how vastly different the room looked before.
WEST UNIVERSITY STUDY – BEFORE
WEST UNIVERSITY – DESIGN BOARDS
My client is a busy working mom and wanted this study to be her downstairs personal sanctuary. It also needed to function as a make-shift guest room, so it was important to consider the furnishings in this conservatively sized study. Every inch was going to matter. An appropriately sized daybed would serve as a guest bed but also comfortable lounge seating. The wall of built-ins was great but we needed to maximize the storage and the style, using decorative storage boxes and organizational catch-alls. The paint color was the pivotal design element I presented – and I was delighted that my client was on board! We agreed to paint all surfaces this vibrant violet hue – walls, paneling, ceiling, doors – everything! A dazzling gold light fixture and brass accents would contrast nicely against the walls, and a light area rug would help brighten the space. A graphic geometric fabric on the desk chair and would tie together with the daybed pillows. And large, tropical, colorful art would be another contrast against the intense wall color.
WEST UNIVERSITY STUDY – AFTER
And BAM! This paint color is not for the timid! In the space, it really reads as fun and has a level of sophistication in a very unexpected way. The paint contractor initially thought I was absolutely crazy, but once he saw all of the elements come together, he could then see the vision. 😉
My client has been absolutely loving this room, and says her kids want to hang out with her here all the time! It can really pay off to take a big color risk – what do you have to lose???
