If you have ever watched HGTV, even for 3 minutes, it would be safe to say that you saw some form of subway tile in some type of space.  I know, I know – it can get old quickly!  Subway tile is used so often because it is extremely economical, durable, and easy to clean.  While you might be tired of seeing it installed just about everywhere in straight, offset rows – I bet these more inventive subway tile patterns below could reignite your interest in the classic material.  Let’s take a look…

INVENTIVE SUBWAY TILE PATTERNS #1 – BASKETWEAVE

I love this pattern!  It is fresh and interesting, and I could see it working well in both contemporary and traditional spaces.  It looks especially graphic with the contrasting grout color.

INVENTIVE SUBWAY TILE PATTERNS #2 – ROWS IN ALTERNATING SIZES

Subway tile in rows of alternating tile sizes screams sophistication!  This bathroom looks high end and very custom, and would appeal to a wide array of tile lovers.

INVENTIVE SUBWAY TILE PATTERNS #3 – DIAGONAL

This pattern of diagonal subway tile is the most daring of my roundup today.  I think it does the visual trick of making the space appear larger – even though the tile is dark!  If you are looking for an original and funky tile layout, diagonal is for you.

INVENTIVE SUBWAY TILE PATTERNS #4 – HERRINGBONE

A herringbone tile pattern is undoubtedly classic and just downright pretty.  It is much more interesting a style-forward that your basic offset rows pattern, however.

INVENTIVE SUBWAY TILE PATTERNS #5 – STRAIGHT STACK

For all the lovers of contemporary and streamlined design, the straight stack might be your cup of tea!  I love how calming it appears in this simplistic space.

INVENTIVE SUBWAY TILE PATTERNS #6 – VERTICAL OFFSET 1

A subway tile pattern that I am itching to try in an upcoming renovation project is the vertical offset.  It absolutely brings the eye up and makes the room appear taller.  It works very well in a clean, modern space.

INVENTIVE SUBWAY TILE PATTERNS #7 – VERTICAL OFFSET 2

This variation of the vertical offset pattern is a bit more horizontal.  Like the last example, it adds height to the room while looking chic and clean.
