Sisal vs. Jute Rugs

Image via Annie Selke

From soft Jute to sustainable Sisal, these natural fiber rugs add organic beauty and texture to any space.

Sisal and Jute are both, natural fiber rugs. Unlike their counterparts, synthetic rugs, materials for these rugs are made from sustainable fibers sourced from fast-growing crops that are harvested all year round. Their neutral colors and woven textures have made these eco-friendly rugs a staple in modern home decor!

SO WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

While both materials are composed of natural fibers that have similar looks to them and are often grouped together often, Sisal and Jute are not one and the same!

JUTE

Jute rugs, in particular, have proven very popular when it comes to interior design. From their durability, easy maintenance, eco-friendly sustainability, and cost-effectiveness. Jute is a natural fiber sourced from Corchorus plants. Undyed jute rugs have a shiny, light beige color that adds a beautiful texture and organic feel to any space. Despite its natural toughness and durability (a jute rug can last for years), jute rugs are known for being incredibly soft and breathable. Their natural softness and sturdiness makes these rugs great for primary and guest bedrooms, as well as dining rooms, living areas, and kitchens.

SISAL

Sisal is a long, stiff, rugged fiber sourced from agave plants. When comparing sisal to jute rugs, the main difference between them is their texture and durability. Sisal is a stiffer fiber and feels coarse underfoot, making these rugs ideal for outdoors, entryways, hallway runners, and homes with kids and pets.
