The word “trend” scares some peeps when it comes to interiors. They think that having anything trendy will be a waste of money when they have to ditch the dated item in only a couple of years. But the trend I’m sharing today is a good one because it falls into other categories that will never go out of style: natural and textural. Rattan has made a major resurgence this year, and I honestly love the LAYERED quality that it can add to a flat/basic space.
The 11 rooms below show how rattan can be incorporated in a way that is fresh, exciting, and inviting.
This image illustrates one of my favorite design equations: rattan + black + white. Can you say chic? This kitchen is fresh, but so much more interesting than just a safe all white kitchen. The rattan stools add a gorgeous layer of earthy texture and add a dash of ecclectic style.
This second example again reveals that rattan pairs so well with classic elements, like the white subway in the kitchen area. The funky and modern chair shape pumps up the rattan impact. With an looser open weave, rattan helps these chairs to feel light, airy and sculptural.
This room boasts only a dash of rattan on the chair seats, but the balance here is on point. There is a fine line in keeping a room neutral but not stale, and the tactile texture of rattan here adds a layer of necessary warmth.

Rattan stools are a great way to inject the trend into your space without making a huge commitment. Not to beat a dead horse, but the texture is just too good. The warm natural tone of rattan gives this neutral white room the layer of contrast it needs.
Um ok I LOVE these lights. Paired with the super modern waterfall island, these funky lights are just perfect. A guest walking into this kitchen for the first time would never expect rattan lights, and that’s why I love ’em. Be unique!

A lot of rattan pieces are so great b/c they come in whimsical and untraditional shapes. Like these hanging chairs in this fresh and nautical bunk room. Cover up the chairs in the photo with your hand – the room is still nice, but just plain. The rattan chairs add the personality!
Traditional pieces pair great with rattan too. These simple beds flank a traditional chest so nicely. If the beds were solid wood too, the feeling would be heavy and change the feel of the room completely.
So by now, I’ve hopefully convinced you – rattan might be the element that your space is missing! I would say rattan is definitely trending right now, but there are also plenty of classic interpretations if you want a piece that has staying power.
