The Ultimate Guide to Throw Pillows

LET’S GET DOWN TO PILLOW TALK!

From cozy to luxurious, throw pillows seamlessly add the vibe to any space. Throw pillows are one of the best ways to update your home decor seasonally, or refresh a space for a cute and cozy new color scheme or style.

HOW TO ARRAGE THROW PILLOWS

  1. TIP #1 – When arranging throw pillows on sofa, place larger pillow in a solid color towards the back, usually a 22 – 24” size. In front of that a smaller, more geometric patterned pillows, usually 20” – 22” in size.

  2. TIP #2 – Mix contrasting colors and types of patterns – for example mix a more saturated color in a geometric pattern with a lighter color in a more organic/soft pattern.

  3. TIP #3 – With groupings of 3 pillows, consider mixing the following:  solid, smaller geometric pattern, and a larger looser natural pattern.

PILLOW INSERTS

A common misconception when it comes to throw pillows, are the pillow inserts. Many retailers, especially mid to high-end ones, sell the pillow cover separately from the insert. Pillow inserts come in a variety of sizes, fills, and price points. When purchasing a throw pillow, it is important to double check if the price you are paying is for just the cover, or if the insert is included.

BECAUSE IT’S WHAT’S ON THE INSIDE THAT COUNTS! …Right?

Pillows are meant to bring extra comfort and cushion to your space. So it’s safe to say that, what’s on the inside is just as important as the outside, the pillow insert you choose makes a significant difference in the appearance of the pillows; But with so many insert options out there, which fill material is best for you? Such a small detail could make a significant difference in look and comfort.

The most common options for premium pillow inserts are feather and down alternatives. Both options provide firmness, weight, body and support, while down provides softness and comfort. A higher percentage of down tends to be considered more luxurious, however depending on the use of the pillow, you’ll want to be careful not to go too high on the down percentage as it will make it overly soft and unsupportive.

PILLOW INSERT PRO TIP:

Avoid purchasing an insert that is the same size as the cover. Using the same size pillow insert will actually make your pillow look flat and cheap. To achieve that designer store pillow look, purchase a pillow insert two inches larger than your pillow cover. For example: If you have an 18” x 18” pillow cover, size up and use a 20” x 20” insert.
