Subtle and refined does not always equal boring and bland. This sophisticated sitting room in West University Place in Houston, TX combines unique textures, calm patterns, bold artwork and the very important aspect of correct scale. I consider a formal sitting room to be a great asset to any house. Let’s take a look at this space before.
WEST UNIVERSITY SITTING ROOM – BEFORE
WEST UNIVERSITY SITTING ROOM – DESIGN BOARDS
I have been working with my great client in West University for several years, making our way designing through her home. It was time to tackle the sitting room, which sits right off the front foyer. My client needed this space to function as a music room for her children, but also a nice adult space for guests, or a quiet night of reading. This traditional home has lovely bones and beautiful architecture, so we wanted to stay true to the traditional roots but add some modern elements for a nice tension.
Barrel accent chairs in a plush boucle fabric were to be centered on the beautiful front windows, with a more traditional and grand floor lamp in between. The warm gold and gray area rug would set as a nice neutral backdrop to the seating arrangement. A small but substantial round coffee table is perfect for this small seating area, as well as a traditional loveseat in Sunbrella fabric. My client had a wonderful landscape oil painting in bright yellows and golds that would contrast nicely above the dark piano and curio cabinets.
