There is Such a Thing as Too Much Farmhouse

Ok now, I do realize that this post will likely be a polarizing one.  But stick with me here.  Due to the charismatic and wonderful duo known as Chip and Joanna Gaines, a frenzy of farmhouse inspired EVERYTHING has taken over the nation.  And I get it – I really do!  Their work is well-done, cozy, lovely, and charming.  Their designs epitomize family and togetherness and small town charm.  

But, when a good thing comes along, it is often repeated over and over until it becomes not-so authentic and less-than well done, and I believe that the Gaines craze has caused this very thing to happen in the realm of interior trends.

My main point here is this – if you live on a FARM, your home should be in the style of a farmhouse….absolutely!  Use rustic wood, sliding barn doors, chipped paint, shabby chic chandeliers, chicken wire, galvanized tin, hand painted signs, and  boxwood wreaths – from floor to ceiling!  Because you live on a farm.  It works.  Do your thing.

On the other hand, if you live in the suburbs in a builder-grade home that is 3 years old, I would urge you to tone down the farmhouse decor a bit.  If you are absolutely infatuated with the farmhouse style, you can incorporate farmhouse elements sparingly and mix them with other complementary styles.  The result will be a beautiful, stylish blend – that doesn’t look like it is trying too hard to be something it is not.  Trying to mimic a farmhouse does not make your home a farmhouse.  It

How to Tastefully Incorporate Farmhouse Style #1 – Shiplap

I absolutely love the unexpected look of shiplap here – painted dark!  The moody dark hue, paired with more streamlined furnishings keeps the space feeling fresh.

If white shiplap is your non-negotiable, here’s an example of it done well.  Again, paired with modern elements, the shiplap leans more minimalistic, and not country at all.

How to Tastefully Incorporate Farmhouse Style #2 – Sliding Barn Doors

Rustic barn doors are beloved by many, but in my opinion, they are used a bit too frequently in homes that really aren’t well suited.  Here’s an example of a sliding door done so well – with modern lines, gorgeous sleek hardware,  and a fresh dark color, this door is such a beautiful statement.

You’re probably starting to see a trend here – I love when farmhouse elements are done in a modern way.  This sliding barn door is so cool and refined – and there’s no chance of this space looking gimmicky.  

How to Tastefully Incorporate Farmhouse Style #3 – Farmhouse Sink

Of all the farmhouse elements I’m discussing today, the apron front sink is the easiest to incorporate in a variety of home styles!  Here is an example of a modern stainless apron front sink that mixes beautifully with the other bright white traiditional kitchen elements.

I love this kitchen – it mixes traditional, modern, and rustic elements perfectly.  A white apron front sink mixed with the clean brass faucet is a winning combo that oozes sophistication.

How to Tastefully Incorporate Farmhouse Style #4 – Farm Table

If you’re looking for a less-permanent furniture option to inject a bit of farmhouse flair, consider a rustic dining table.  However, the other furniture in this space should not be as rustic.  This room above shows the perfect blend:  a farmhouse table, slightly rustic side chairs, traditional hostess chairs, and a classic chandelier with a modern twist.

There is one furniture combination that always looks chic….rustic farm dining table + extremely modern dining chairs = the coolest dining room on the block.
